Mastercard announced today they are partnering with tennis player Naomi Osaka. Naomi Osaka is a two-time grand slam winner who represents Japan.

Through the appointment of Naomi Osaka, the financial service company is trying to expand into Asian market. The company has always been a major sponsor when it comes to major sporting tournaments. This is the first they are associating with a tennis player who is a current number one in ranking.

Raja Rajamannar, the chief of marketing and communication at Mastercard said, “Naomi Osaka is the next generation of tennis greatness and we are thrilled to support her quest to be the best tennis player in the world. As Asia’s first world number one player, she is an inspiration not just to her fans in Japan in the region, but to young girls and boys around the world. We see our relationship an opportunity for us to enable her- as a consumer and our brand ambassador- to experience all the security and convenience of our payment product and service.”

Osaka’s addition to the Mastercard carries significance for women in sports. Her presence gives away the message of gender inclusion.

Naomi Osaka tweeted her reaction saying during her last tournament on the association, “Happy to get first win @MutuaMadridOpen. Excited about my new partnership with Mastercard. Look out for cool things in future.”

Mastercard  was the sponsor of several premier sporting events like Ronald-Garros, UEFA Champions League, The Australian Open and many more.
