An impressive performance by the Indian men’s hockey team in the FIH Pro League 2022-23. Finishing fourth with 30 points from 16 matches is a commendable achievement. This marked India’s second fourth-place finish in the FIH Pro League, following their debut season in 2020-21.
The campaign had two distinct halves for the Indian team. In the first leg, played at home, they put on a strong display, winning five matches, drawing two, and suffering just one defeat against Spain. Notably, they secured victories against reigning world champions Germany and Commonwealth Games champions Australia, winning the shootout against the latter.
However, the away leg in Europe proved to be more challenging. Although India entered the European leg as the leaders in the points table, they managed only three wins, one draw, and four defeats from the eight away games. They secured wins against Argentina (2) and Belgium (1) but lost both matches against eventual champions Netherlands.
Despite their efforts, India couldn’t clinch the title. The Netherlands successfully defended their crown, finishing with 35 points from 16 matches. Great Britain secured second place with 32 points, while Belgium finished above India due to having more wins, despite having the same number of points.
Interestingly, India displayed great performance in shootouts, winning all three of them in the FIH Pro League 2022-23. Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of the Indian team, emerged as the top scorer of the tournament for the second consecutive season, netting an impressive 18 goals.
While India couldn’t secure the top position, their performance in the FIH Pro League 2022-23 showcases their progress and competitiveness on the international stage.
