The 5th Junior Boys National Boxing Championship 2023 is being held at Don Bosco College, Jullang, in Arunachal Pradesh from 9th to 14th July. The event was declared open by the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu. The Chief Minister expressed his hope that the participants, technical officers, and officials of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) will have a memorable experience and become goodwill ambassadors for the state.

Pema Khandu thanked the BFI for selecting Arunachal Pradesh to host this important event and highlighted that the state has been actively hosting various sports events recently, including an international table tennis championship and a national curling event. He credited the efforts of the Indian government, particularly under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for India’s emergence as a sporting powerhouse in the world arena. Khandu also emphasized the immense potential of Indian youth in sports and mentioned the establishment of five Centers of Excellence for various sports disciplines at the Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy in Arunachal Pradesh.

“This signifies that Arunachal Pradesh is marching ahead in the sporting field. I am happy to inform that the Centre has approved establishment of one more Centre of Excellence here for Hockey” he added.

The Chief Minister acknowledged that some of these sports may be relatively new to Arunachal Pradesh but expressed confidence in the fast-learning abilities of the state’s youth. He assured that within the next few years, the youth of Arunachal Pradesh will be able to compete at all levels. Khandu reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to prioritizing games and sports and announced the establishment of another sports academy in Changlong to nurture young talents from eastern Arunachal Pradesh.

“With the backing of proper result-centric polices by the central government, the sporting graph of India has shot up to the top level. Arunachal Pradesh too is benefiting from these policies,” he said.

Pema Khandu praised the boxing championship in Itanagar as one of the best in terms of the record number of participants, with a total of 367 boxers taking part. He expressed optimism that budding boxers from the state would be inspired by the event. To promote boxing further, Khandu promised to provide world-class boxing rings across the state. He suggested that universities and colleges could be selected as venues for the development of boxing rings to benefit a maximum number of aspiring boxers.

“Our boxers have participated at the highest levels and brought laurels. From here on, sky is the limit,” he said.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Mama Natung, President of the Arunachal Olympic Association (AOA) and Education Minister Taba Tedir, Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) Hemanta Kumar Kalita, officials of the Arunachal Amateur Boxing Association, and the Sports department.
