Impressive performances and potential of young cricket talents from different countries, many of whom are being considered for their respective national teams’ squads in the upcoming Cricket World Cup.
Tilak Varma, a 20-year-old Indian cricketer, made a remarkable entrance into international cricket by confidently hitting the second ball he faced for a six. He continued his impressive form throughout his debut T20I series, accumulating 173 runs at a strike rate exceeding 140. Despite his youth, Varma displayed maturity and composure that have caught the attention of selectors, positioning him as a potential addition to India’s Cricket World Cup squad. His left-handed style and participation in the 2020 U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup further enhance his credentials. While he’s yet to debut in ODIs, his inclusion in the upcoming Asia Cup in Pakistan and Sri Lanka could provide an opportunity for him.
“If Tilak Varma is hot, bring him in,” former India head coach Ravi Shastri commented on Star Sports, adding that he was “very, very impressed” with Tilak.
“If I am looking for a left-hander, I would really look in that direction,” Shastri stated.
Dewald Brevis, a South African cricketer and Varma’s franchise teammate, has drawn comparisons to AB de Villiers due to his batting style. Although he’s yet to make his debut for the senior South African team, Brevis’ strong performances in professional and franchise cricket have put him in contention for a World Cup spot. Among the notable cricketers from the 2022 U19 World Cup, Naseem Shah from Pakistan is certain to feature in the World Cup, while others like Ibrahim Zadran, Noor Ahmad, and Fazalhaq Farooqi are part of Afghanistan’s ODI plans. Matheesha Pathirana is involved in Sri Lanka’s limited-overs setup, while Dilshan Madushanka’s return from injury could strengthen Sri Lanka’s fast bowling department. Leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, a surprise pick in Australia’s provisional World Cup squad, showed his potential with 15 wickets in the 2020 U19 World Cup. Shoriful Islam, pivotal in Bangladesh’s U19 title win, is also expected to participate in the World Cup.
India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi, who excelled in the 2020 U19 World Cup, have already made their debuts in different formats for the senior team. While Jaiswal faces competition in the top-order, Bishnoi’s spin-bowling prowess could earn him a spot in the World Cup squad.
