Indian badminton player Prannoy HS secured a bronze medal in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships but fell short in the semifinals against Kunlavut Vitidsarn. The match saw Prannoy put up a strong fight but ultimately lose with a scoreline of 21-18, 13-21, 14-21.
The contest began with a closely fought first game that Prannoy won. However, Vitidsarn managed to make a comeback in the second game, and despite Prannoy’s efforts, he lost that game. The third game also proved challenging for Prannoy as he was trailing from the start, and Vitidsarn emerged victorious with a score of 14-21.
In the quarterfinals of the tournament, Prannoy had made an impressive showing by defeating Viktor Axelsen, the World Number 2 and defending champion.
With this bronze medal, India’s tally in the BWF World Championships stands at 14 medals – one gold, four silvers, and nine bronzes. Notable Indian achievements in the history of the championships include Prakash Padukone’s bronze in 1983, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa’s bronze in 2011, PV Sindhu’s historic gold in 2019, Saina Nehwal’s silver and bronze medals, Sai Praneeth’s bronze in 2019, Kidambi Srikanth’s silver in 2021, and Lakshya Sen’s bronze in 2021. The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also made history with a bronze in a previous edition.
The BWF World Championships 2023 took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, from August 21 to 27. India’s representation included players in various categories:
- Men’s singles: HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth
- Women’s singles: PV Sindhu
- Men’s doubles: Chirag Shetty/Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, MR Arjun/Dhruv Kapila
- Women’s doubles: Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand, Ashwini Bhat K/Shikha Gautam
- Mixed doubles: Rohan Kapoor/N Sikki Reddy, Venkat Prasad/Juhi Dewangan.
Despite Prannoy’s semifinal loss, his performance in the championship showcased India’s growing presence and competitiveness in the international badminton scene.
