Their latest encounter with second-placed South Africa showcased India’s unwavering dominance, as they defeated their opponents by a staggering 243 runs. Virat Kohli played a pivotal role in this comprehensive victory, earning the player of the match title for his unbeaten century.
Kohli’s remarkable innings not only contributed to India’s triumph but also allowed him to equal the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record of the most centuries in ODIs. Shreyas Iyer also made a substantial impact with his 77 off 87 balls, including a crucial partnership with Kohli. Together, they propelled India to a formidable total of 326/5, following a fiery start from Rohit Sharma.
Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir lauded the exceptional performance of Kohli and Iyer, highlighting their ability to adapt to the gradually slowing pitch conditions. He emphasized that their efforts deserved even more recognition than those of the opening duo, Shubman Gill and Rohit, who provided a quick 62-run start in less than six overs. The Indian bowlers were equally impressive, with Ravindra Jadeja emerging as the standout performer, claiming a five-wicket haul.
“I believe Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli batted on a different planet. This was not the Wankhede or Delhi where the conditions are easy throughout the innings. Here it was easy at the start and became difficult in the middle and at the end. So I believe both should be praised more than Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill,” noted Gambhir while speaking on Star Sports, the official broadcaster of the tournament.
“Spin was going to be the biggest challenge. The way the two of them batted against Keshav Maharaj, he might have conceded just 30 runs but the important thing was that he picked up just one wicket, and because of that South Africa had to get their fast bowlers back,” he attached.
Their clinical bowling performance led to South Africa’s collapse, as they were bundled out for a mere 83 runs in just 27.1 overs. India’s all-round display in this match demonstrated their formidable position in the tournament and their determination to claim the ODI World Cup title.
