The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly offered an open-ended extension to Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the men’s cricket team. The extension comes after the conclusion of the ODI World Cup 2023, where India finished as the runners-up. Dravid’s initial term as coach ended with the tournament. However, there is no confirmation on whether Dravid has accepted the extension at this point.

The decision to offer the extension is said to be motivated by the desire to maintain the continuity of the structure implemented by Dravid over the past two years. Rahul Dravid took over as the coach after India’s exit from the 2021 T20 World Cup. Under his coaching, India reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup in the following year and had an impressive unbeaten run of 10 wins in the ODI World Cup before losing to Australia in the final. India also reached the World Test Championship (WTC) final but lost to Australia in June 2023. Presently, India holds the number one ranking across formats.

Talking about his potential extension during the ODI World Cup, he had said: “I haven’t thought about it. I have no time to think about this, and no time to reflect on this. I will when I get the time to do that. But at this point of time, I was completely focused on this campaign. It was focused on this World Cup, and there was nothing else on my mind. And I haven’t given any other thought to what happens in the future.”

If Dravid chooses to accept the extension, his first assignment would be India’s tour of South Africa, starting with six white-ball games (three T20Is and three ODIs each) from December 10. The tour will be followed by two Tests in Centurion (from December 26) and Cape Town (from January 3).
