The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has released the ‘Race to Paris’ Ranking List, determining the quota allocations for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Indian badminton players, including PV Sindhu, have secured five quotas based on their rankings in this list. Sindhu, a former world champion and medalist at both the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, secured her quota by finishing 12th in the rankings.

The qualifying period for the Olympics began on May 1 of the previous year and concluded on April 28. Players who ranked in the top 16 of the ‘Race to Paris’ Rankings, with a maximum of two per country, earned spots for their national teams. In total, 35 shuttlers secured quotas through this list, including allocations for continental representation.

In men’s singles, HS Prannoy, ranked ninth, and Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen, ranked 13th, secured quotas for India. The remaining two quotas came in doubles competitions, with Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy securing the third spot in men’s doubles, and Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto finishing 13th in women’s doubles.

Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy made history by becoming the first Indian doubles pair to achieve the world number one ranking following their gold medal win at the Asian Games Hangzhou. Meanwhile, Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto showcased their talent by winning titles at the Abu Dhabi Masters and Guwahati Masters, as well as finishing as runners-up in the Syed Modi International BWF Super 300 tournament.

With a total of seven badminton quotas, India could field its joint-largest badminton contingent in Olympic history, matching the seven shuttlers who competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics. This achievement underscores India’s growing presence and success in international badminton competitions.
