The Rajasthan Royals faced a challenging situation as they approached the IPL 2024 playoffs, having encountered a string of four consecutive defeats. Captain Sanju Samson openly acknowledged the team’s recent failures, underscoring the necessity for players to elevate their performances and take individual responsibility for securing victories. Samson emphasized the critical need for the team to identify areas of improvement collectively, reflecting a desire to address shortcomings and enhance their overall performance.

In his address, Samson stressed the importance of players demonstrating the right character and passion, particularly during crucial stages of the tournament. He urged each member of the team to strive for excellence and to be willing to make significant contributions to reverse the team’s fortunes. Despite cricket being inherently a team sport, Samson emphasized the crucial role of individual players in delivering decisive performances that could significantly impact the team’s success.

‘It was a not a 140 wicket’: Sanju Samson

“We were expecting wicket to be a touch better. I think it’s not a 140-kind of a wicket, we should have got around 160. I think that’s where we lost the game.”

Reflecting on their recent defeat against Punjab Kings, Samson highlighted their failure to set a competitive total, attributing it to the challenging conditions of a sluggish pitch in Guwahati. He expressed disappointment with their batting performance, suggesting that they should have aimed for a higher score, around 160 runs, rather than settling for 144/9. Additionally, Samson acknowledged the challenge posed by limited bowling options, a consequence of wickets falling at regular intervals during their innings, despite the quality of their existing bowlers.

“It would have been nicer to have one more bowling option, it gets a little tough when you have just five. But I am used to it. And we have five quality bowlers.”

Despite the series of setbacks, the Rajasthan Royals managed to secure a playoff spot, largely due to their strong performance during the first half of the tournament. Samson remained optimistic about the team’s prospects moving forward, expressing confidence in their ability to bounce back and regain momentum. He reiterated the team’s commitment to delivering improved performances in the upcoming matches, underscoring their determination to compete at a high level and achieve success in the playoffs.
