Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title and their first in a decade with a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium. This triumph was driven by stellar performances from Mitchell Starc, Andre Russell, and a pivotal half-century by Venkatesh Iyer.
SRH, known for their aggressive batting led by openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, struggled against KKR’s formidable bowling attack. Mitchell Starc, KKR’s star acquisition, delivered an exceptional opening spell, taking 2-14. His efforts were complemented by Andre Russell’s impactful 3-19, which decimated the SRH batting line-up. Vaibhav Arora, Sunil Narine, and Varun Chakaravarthy also contributed significantly, restricting SRH to a meager 113 runs.
In the chase, KKR’s openers Sunil Narine and Rahmanullah Gurbaz were quickly separated by SRH captain Pat Cummins, who dismissed Narine for just six runs. Venkatesh Iyer then partnered with Gurbaz, launching a counter-attack. Iyer’s explosive batting in Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s over brought 20 runs, setting a solid foundation. Gurbaz’s boundary off Cummins brought KKR to 50 runs in 4.1 overs, and another 20-run over during the powerplay further accelerated their chase.
Despite losing Gurbaz for 39 runs, KKR maintained their momentum. Iyer’s aggressive innings continued, reaching his half-century and steering KKR to victory. Shreyas Iyer contributed with a quick boundary, sealing the win with KKR finishing at 114/2 in just 10.3 overs.
Earlier, SRH’s innings faltered due to the relentless Kolkata Knight Riders bowling attack. After losing key openers Sharma and Head early to Starc and Arora, SRH struggled to build partnerships. Despite Aiden Markram’s brief resistance, scoring 20 runs, the rest of the batting line-up crumbled under pressure. Russell’s late strikes ensured SRH were bundled out for 113 in 18.3 overs.
This victory highlights KKR’s all-round prowess, with their bowlers setting up the win and their batsmen efficiently chasing the target. The match was a testament to KKR’s strategic acquisitions and their ability to perform under pressure, securing a memorable IPL title.
