Ace Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat clinched the silver medal at the Polyak Imre and Varga Janos Memorial 2024 wrestling tournament held in Budapest, Hungary. Competing in the men’s 57kg category, Sehrawat faced a tough opponent in the final—former world champion and Rio 2016 Olympics silver medallist Rei Higuchi of Japan. Despite his efforts, Sehrawat was defeated 11-1, marking a significant moment in his wrestling career.

Sehrawat’s journey to the final showcased his impressive skills and determination. The 2023 Asian champion began with a dominant 11-1 victory over Roberti Dingashvili of Georgia in the quarter-finals. He then secured his spot in the final by overcoming the 2021 World Championships bronze medallist Aryan Tsiutryn with a commanding 14-4 win. These performances underscored Sehrawat’s status as a rising star in the wrestling world.

Sehrawat was the sole male wrestler representing India at this prestigious tournament. His participation c for India at the World Olympic Wrestling Qualifiers in Istanbul, Turkey, last month. This achievement ensured his place at the Paris 2024 Olympics, adding to his growing list of accomplishments.

India’s presence in the tournament is further highlighted by Antim Panghal, who obtained the country’s first wrestling quota for Paris 2024 from the world championships last year. Additionally, two other prominent Indian wrestlers, 2018 Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat (50kg) and Anshu Malik (57kg), are set to compete in the Budapest ranking series in the coming days, adding to the excitement and expectations for Indian wrestling.

The ongoing Polyak Imre and Varga Janos Memorial serves as the final wrestling ranking series before the Paris 2024 Olympics. Wrestlers participating in this tournament have the opportunity to earn points that will determine their rankings. These rankings are crucial as they will eventually decide the seeding of wrestlers who have secured an Olympic quota for the upcoming Summer Games.

Currently, India has secured a total of six quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics—five in women’s wrestling and one in men’s freestyle. This significant achievement highlights the country’s strong presence and competitive spirit in the international wrestling arena, setting the stage for a promising performance at the forthcoming Olympics.
