India’s bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, addressed concerns regarding all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s underwhelming performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. During a pre-match press conference, Mhambrey emphasized that it’s unrealistic to expect all players to hit peak form simultaneously. In the tournament’s first two matches against Ireland and Pakistan, Jadeja, a seasoned 35-year-old player, struggled both with the bat and ball, failing to take wickets or make significant contributions with his batting.
“I think it’s a team game, right? It’s going to be 11 guys. You really don’t expect all of them coming into form. It’s going to be performed every game that will happen. For me, I personally feel whatever conversations Rahul and Vicky are having around, I’ve been pretty happy with it. And you expect a one-odd game out there,” Mhambrey stated.
Mhambrey expressed contentment with head coach Rahul Dravid and batting coach Vikram Rathour’s efforts to keep Jadeja motivated through ongoing discussions. He highlighted that the T20 World Cup is a lengthy competition, and a player of Jadeja’s caliber needs just one game to regain his form. Mhambrey acknowledged that Jadeja isn’t the only player facing difficulties; other key players, including Shivam Dube, are also experiencing a dip in performance. He stressed the importance of team support during such tournaments, advocating for backing players even when they struggle.
“It’s a long tournament. I think…someone like Jadeja, who’s so vastly experienced, he just needs a game out there to just get his roots around and feel around. And we know that the skills that he has and the experience, he’s going to go ahead and he’s going to win your games. So that confidence we have in not only Jadeja but honestly with someone like Dube and others as well,” he attached.
“You can have one odd game and people will have conversations saying you are given a game, and you’re going to have one bad game. That’s fine, but the team will back you. And that’s what is important in a tournament like this,” he attached.
Looking ahead, India is set to face the United States in their next match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. Mhambrey’s comments reflect the team’s strategy of maintaining confidence in their players, trusting in their experience and ability to bounce back, which is crucial for sustaining morale and performance throughout the tournament.
