In today’s fast-paced work environment, job burnout is a growing concern for many employees. A recent study, published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, reveals that moderate physical activity can effectively combat burnout, reduce emotional exhaustion, and improve job satisfaction. The study investigated more than 500 employees, analyzing their work-life balance, physical activity habits, and the impact of these factors on burnout levels.

The Role of Moderate Physical Activity

Michele Wolf Marenus, PhD, a research scientist at Personify Health and lead author of the study, explains that moderate physical activity involves “three or more days of at least 20 minutes of vigorous activity, such as running, or five or more days of 30 minutes of moderate activity like strength training, dancing, or hiking.” Additionally, simple habits like taking the stairs or parking farther from the workplace to increase daily steps also count toward moderate activity.

According to Marenus, an ideal weekly routine involves “three to five days of very challenging exercise,” balancing intensity with recovery. The key takeaway is that moderation is important – neither too much nor too little exercise yields the most benefits.

Key Findings of the Study

The study participants were split into three categories based on their physical activity levels: low, moderate, and high. Roughly 53% of the participants reported engaging in moderate physical activity. This group experienced the lowest levels of emotional exhaustion and the highest sense of personal accomplishment.

Interestingly, while exercise helps reduce burnout, the research revealed that high-intensity physical activity did not offer significantly better results than moderate levels. In fact, moderate exercisers fared better in terms of emotional well-being and work-life balance.

The study suggests that physical activity provides employees a valuable break from work, offering them time to recover both mentally and physically. Exercise not only boosts cardiovascular health but also improves mood, emotional regulation, and memory, contributing to overall well-being. Engaging in regular, moderate exercise helps employees step away from work-related stresses and recharge, ultimately making them feel more accomplished and emotionally drained.
