The Indian men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, known as ‘Sat-Chi,’ advanced to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Malaysian Open badminton tournament in Kuala Lumpur. On Thursday, they secured a comprehensive win against local players Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong, defeating them 21-15, 21-15 at the Stadium Axiata Arena. Their next challenge in the quarterfinals will be against Malaysia’s Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi.

However, it was a disappointing day for the rest of the Indian contingent. HS Prannoy’s campaign ended in the round of 16 after a grueling match against China’s seventh-seeded She Feng Li. Despite winning the second game and taking the decider to a tie-breaker, Prannoy fell short, losing 8-21, 21-15, 21-23 in a match that lasted over an hour. Similarly, Malvika Bansod faced an early exit in the women’s singles after losing to third-seeded Han Yue of China. Although Malvika started strong with a 6-2 lead, she could not maintain the momentum, resulting in an 18-21, 11-21 defeat.

India’s doubles pairs also faced setbacks, with mixed doubles duo Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto bowing out after a straight-games loss to China’s Zhang Chi and Cheng Xing, 13-21, 20-22. The women’s doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also exited the tournament, losing to China’s Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian despite a strong start, with a final score of 21-15, 18-21, 19-21.

The Malaysian Open will continue until Sunday, January 12, with the Indian spotlight now focused on Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy as they aim to advance further in the tournament.
