In response to a claim on social media by physiotherapist Madz Mariwa about the benefits of a deep squat with a mobile torso for diabetic patients, there were several questions about how this exercise specifically benefits people with diabetes. Many followers were curious about whether this exercise could be particularly effective for managing the condition.

To address these questions, Dr. Ravi Shekhar Jha, Director of Pulmonology at Fortis Hospital in Faridabad, offered his expertise. Dr. Jha clarified that there is no exercise that is uniquely designed or exclusive for people with diabetes. Instead, regular physical activity is vital for managing the condition. Exercise helps burn calories, improve insulin sensitivity, and control blood sugar levels, making it an essential component of diabetes management.

Dr. Jha also pointed out that the influencer’s suggestion to target the pancreas with exercise is misleading. The pancreas, being both an exocrine and endocrine gland, is not a muscle that can be trained through physical activity. Therefore, claiming that a specific exercise can directly impact insulin release from the pancreas is inaccurate.

According to Dr. Jha, while certain types of exercise, such as strength training or aerobic exercises, may be more effective for controlling blood sugar, the overall key to managing diabetes is consistency in any form of physical activity that burns calories and improves fitness. He cautioned against taking exercise claims made by influencers at face value, emphasizing that these may be more about marketing than providing medically sound advice.

Finally, Dr. Jha recommended a balanced approach to exercise, combining different types of physical activities, including cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. This combination is considered the most effective way to manage diabetes in the long term. Dr. Jha also stressed the importance of seeking personalized advice from healthcare professionals who can provide tailored recommendations based on an individual’s health status.
