East Bengal FC is set to face FC Arkadag of Turkmenistan in the first leg of the AFC Challenge League quarter-final at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Wednesday. The Red and Gold Brigade secured their spot in the knockout stage by topping Group A with two wins and a draw in the group-stage fixtures held in Bhutan during October-November. Their strong performance in the tournament has provided a much-needed boost, especially after a shaky start to their Indian Super League (ISL) campaign, helping them regain momentum and reshape their season.

Currently, East Bengal FC is enjoying a four-match unbeaten run, having secured three wins and a draw. However, their recent 1-1 draw against Bengaluru FC in Kolkata on Sunday ended their hopes of making it to the ISL playoffs. Despite this disappointment, the team is determined to shift focus towards making a deep run in the AFC Challenge League. With a rich history in continental competitions, East Bengal FC aims to build on their legacy, recalling their remarkable run to the AFC Cup semi-finals in 2013. Their dominant group-stage performances, including a commanding victory over Bashundhara Kings and a crucial win against Nejmeh SC, have set the stage for an exciting quarter-final clash.

“It is so important for East Bengal and for the country because we will represent India in Asia and we will try to do our best and try to beat FC Arkadag,” stated East Bengal FC captain Saul Crespo, who accompanied Bruzon at the press conference.

Their opponents, FC Arkadag, have been a formidable force since their formation in 2023. The Turkmenistan club has won back-to-back Yokary League titles with a perfect record and also secured consecutive Turkmenistan Cup victories.

“We want every single fan of East Bengal to be here tomorrow, cheering for the team and feeling proud that our club is representing the Indian flag on the international stage,” Bruzon stated.

Their only setback in the AFC Challenge League came in the group stage when they suffered a narrow defeat to Kuwait’s Al-Arabi. East Bengal FC will be hoping to capitalize on home advantage, with their passionate fans expected to create an electrifying atmosphere in Kolkata. With the support of their dedicated followers, the Red and Gold Brigade will look to take a crucial step towards the semi-finals and continue their impressive journey in the tournament.

“So, the task is huge, but don’t doubt that we are going to be up to the mark on the pitch, and we are going to try to make everybody happy and proud by getting the best possible result,” he attached.
