Mohammed Shami faced a significant setback during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 when he suffered an ankle injury that kept him out of action for almost a year. The injury not only sidelined him from cricket but also led to a difficult phase of self-doubt and an intense rehabilitation process. Throughout this period, Shami had to endure physical pain and mental challenges, questioning whether he would be able to return to the field at the highest level. However, his resilience and determination helped him push through, and after months of hard work, he was finally able to make a successful comeback.

The 34-year-old pacer reappeared on the international stage last month, playing in four white-ball matches for India against England. His performances in those games signaled that he was regaining his rhythm and fitness, setting the stage for an even bigger return. Now, Shami is poised to take his comeback further as he prepares to feature in India’s opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday. His inclusion in the squad marks a full-circle moment, highlighting his perseverance and commitment to the game.

Reflecting on his arduous journey, Shami admitted that there were moments of doubt when he thought he might never return to competitive cricket. The prolonged rehabilitation process tested his patience and willpower, but he remained focused on his goal. He credited his family for their unwavering support during his recovery, acknowledging that their encouragement played a crucial role in keeping him motivated. Additionally, he expressed gratitude toward the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for standing by him throughout his rehabilitation, providing the necessary resources and medical support to facilitate his return.

“From being in great form during the World Cup to suddenly finding myself on the operating table from that form to being injured was really tough. My first question to the doctor was ‘how many days until I can be back on the field’. He said my priority is to get you to walk, then jog and then run and thinking about playing competitive cricket is still a distant goal,” Shami informed the ICC.

“I always wondered when I would be able to put my feet on the ground again someone who is used to running on the field constantly was now in crutches. A lot of thoughts used to run through my mind. Will I be able to do it again? Will I be able to walk without a limp? For the first two months, I often doubted whether I would be able to play again as an injury like this, followed by a 14-month break, can pull you down,” the fast bowler attached.

For Shami, the ultimate driving force behind his comeback was his deep desire to once again represent India on the biggest stage. He revealed that the thought of wearing the national jersey and performing for his country gave him the strength to endure the pain and hardship of rehabilitation. Now that he is back, Shami remains determined to make the most of his opportunities and contribute to India’s success.

“After 60 days when they asked me to put my feet on the ground, you won’t believe me, but I have ever been more scared to put my foot on the ground. It felt like I was starting over, like a toddler learning how to walk, and I was worried about any complications,” Shami stated.

“Courage and passion to play for the country are the biggest motivators and the desire to wear the India badge on my chest kept me going. You endure the pain and take it one step at a time without complaints or bitterness. The passion for representing my country has brought me this far. It was tough, and there was pain, but with resilience and patience, I made it through,” Shami attached.

As he prepares for the Champions Trophy, he has made it clear that his goal is to prolong his career and continue serving Indian cricket for as long as his body allows. His return serves as an inspiring story of resilience, dedication, and the unyielding spirit of an athlete who refused to give up on his dreams.

“My motivation has always been to serve my country for as long as possible. Once you step away you’re just like anyone else. Today, by the grace of god I am playing for India again and feeling much better,” Shami ended.
