Indian shuttlers HS Prannoy and Malvika Bansod advanced to the round of 16 in the Malaysia Open 2025 badminton tournament, registering impressive victories in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. HS Prannoy defeated Canada’s Brian Yang in a thrilling match, winning 21-12, 17-21, 21-15. Malvika Bansod had a smoother outing, overcoming local favorite Goh Jin Wei 21-15, 21-16 at the Stadium Axiata Arena.

In the men’s doubles category, India’s Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, seeded seventh in the BWF Super 1000 tournament, began their campaign with a hard-fought win against Chinese Taipei’s Tang Kai-Wei and Lu Ming-che. The pair triumphed 21-10, 16-21, 21-5 in their round of 32 match and will now face Malaysia’s Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong in the pre-quarterfinals.

HS Prannoy’s match against Brian Yang faced unusual delays due to a leaky roof at the stadium. The first game ended 21-12 in Prannoy’s favor on Tuesday, but play was halted during the second game, with Prannoy leading 6-3. The match resumed briefly before being postponed to Wednesday. Brian Yang claimed the second game upon resumption, but Prannoy rallied in the decider to secure his spot in the next round, where he will face China’s seventh-seeded Shi Feng Li. Shi had earlier defeated India’s Priyanshu Rajawat in straight games, 21-11, 21-16.

Malvika Bansod’s victory against Malaysia’s Youth Olympics gold medalist and two-time junior world champion Goh Jin Wei came in just 45 minutes. Bansod will face the tournament’s third seed, China’s Han Yue, in the round of 16. However, Aakarshi Kashyap and Anupama Upadhyaya exited early in the women’s singles competition. Kashyap lost 21-14, 21-12 to Denmark’s Julie Jakobsen, while Anupama succumbed to Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-17, 18-21, 21-8 in a closely contested match.

India’s mixed doubles teams fared well, with Tanisha Crasto-Dhruv Kapila defeating South Korea’s Ko Sung-Hyun and Eom Hye-won 21-13, 21-14. Another Indian duo, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath, won their match against compatriots Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh 21-13, 21-15.

The women’s doubles category, however, proved challenging for Indian pairs. Sibling duo Rutaparna and Swetaparna Panda were beaten 21-17, 21-10 by Thailand’s Benyapa and Nuntakarn Aimsaard. Meanwhile, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, seeded eighth, lost 23-21, 21-12 to Japan’s Misaki Matsutomo and Chiharu Shida in a tough first-round encounter.
