South Africa’s upcoming home cricket series against India will be played without spectators due to a wave of Covid-19 infections, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said on Monday.
Proteas are hosting Visitors for a rumble of tests and ODIs. The first test of three will be played in centurion and later on a series of ODIs will be played in January.
The South African board said in a statement that the decision to play behind closed doors had been taken jointly with the Indian cricket board (BCCI).
“This decision was taken in order to avoid any breaches that could compromise the tour from a Covid-risk perspective and to also maintain a hazard-free bubble environment,” the statement read.
The statement added that the decision was made in the best interest of the game as well as the health and safety of players and staff.
South Africa is a country where Omicron cases were recorded firstly and is believed to be country of origin of Variant. In recent days, there is record number of cases propping up and at about the brim to overwhelm the medical system once again.
India has already dropped a T20I series in the tour, with the proteas due to the havoc and Contemplation of the playing imposed by the Omicron variant. Recently Omicron has also received a Variant of concern status (VOC’s) for many countries due to its rapid transmission and overtaking framework.
