The Indian Cricket Team is gearing up for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the United States and the West Indies. Ahead of their warm-up fixture against Bangladesh, the team was seen practising at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Friday. Visuals from the practice session showed players such as Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, and Avesh Khan bowling in the nets, indicating a focused preparation phase for the tournament.
India is scheduled to commence their T20 World Cup campaign on June 5 against Ireland at the newly constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. This opening match is highly anticipated as it will set the tone for India’s performance in the tournament. One of the most eagerly awaited matches is the clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, slated for June 9. Following this, India will face the tournament co-hosts, the USA and Canada, to conclude their Group A fixtures.
The Indian team is under considerable pressure to break their ICC trophy drought, which has persisted since their last triumph at the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. Despite consistently reaching the advanced stages of various ICC tournaments, India has not secured a major title. They reached the final of the 50-over World Cup in 2023, the semifinals in 2015 and 2019, the final of the ICC World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023, the T20 World Cup final in 2014, and the semifinals in 2016 and 2022, yet have fallen short each time.
India’s last T20 World Cup victory was in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2007, held in South Africa. In the previous T20 World Cup in 2022 in Australia, India was defeated by England in the semifinals by a margin of 10 wickets. With this historical context, the team and its supporters are hopeful that the 2024 edition will mark the end of their long wait for an ICC trophy.
