The Indian Women’s Hockey Team is gearing up for an exciting start to their FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24 campaign, with Bhubaneswar, Odisha, as their initial battleground. Savita continues her pivotal role as the team’s captain, with Vandana Katariya supporting her as deputy.
The action kicks off at the renowned Kalinga Stadium from February 3rd to 9th, before shifting to the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela from February 12th to 18th. The competition promises intense encounters among five formidable teams: India, China, the United States of America, the Netherlands, and Australia.
India’s journey begins with a showdown against reigning Asian Games Champions China on February 3rd, followed by a test against the Netherlands on February 4th. They will then lock horns with Australia on February 7th before concluding their Bhubaneswar leg against the United States on February 9th.
This marks the Indian Women’s Team’s second appearance in the FIH Hockey Pro League, building upon their third-place finish in the 2021/22 season. Their impressive performance in the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup Spain 2022, culminating in a 1-0 victory over Spain in the final, secured their berth in the FIH Pro League 2023/24. With their sights set on further success, the team is poised to showcase their skill and determination on the international stage once again.
Speaking on the importance of the FIH Hockey Pro League, Chief Coach Janneke Schopman stated, “As the team continues to improve it is imperative that we give our best in the FIH Pro League and use this opportunity to test ourselves against some of the best teams in the world. The FIH Pro League will be a great platform for some of the youngsters in the squad to acquaint themselves with the demands of international hockey and further hone their skills. This season we will also have the chance to secure qualification for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, so the team is prepared to give it their all from the first match.”
