The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCI) recently announced India’s squad for an upcoming series against Australia. Notably, several star players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Kuldeep Yadav were absent from the squad for the first two games. Additionally, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson was not included in the squad, which garnered attention and commentary from former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan.

Irfan Pathan expressed his disappointment for Sanju Samson, who had been named as a backup batter in India’s Asia Cup squad but was left out of the squad for the ICC World Cup 2023. In his tweet, Irfan mentioned, “If I’m in place of @IamSanjuSamson right now I will be very disappointed…”

The squad for the Australia series consisted of two separate teams for the first two One Day Internationals (ODIs) and the third ODI. Notably, Samson’s name was missing from both squads, while young talents like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, and Washington Sundar were recalled for the first two ODIs against Australia.

The squads also featured KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan as the two wicketkeeper options for India, with star batters such as Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, and Shubman Gill retaining their places in the ODI squad. Youngster Tilak Varma was added to the squad for the first two ODIs.

One of the major talking points was the return of Ravichandran Ashwin to the ODI setup. Ashwin had not been part of India’s 15-member World Cup squad and also missed the Asia Cup. However, his return was secured due to a hamstring injury to Axar Patel. Ashwin, a spin-bowling all-rounder, last played an ODI for India in 2022.

Here are the squads for the Australia ODIs:

For the first two ODIs: KL Rahul (c), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna, R Ashwin, Washington Sundar.

For the 3rd ODI: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel (subject to fitness), R Ashwin, Washington Sundar.
