In the T20I series between India and Australia, the second-string Indian side, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav and coached by VVS Laxman in the absence of key players, secured an impressive 4-1 victory over Australia. Despite the notable absence of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah, India demonstrated resilience under new leadership. Shreyas Iyer, a crucial part of India’s World Cup campaign, returned for the final two T20Is as Suryakumar’s deputy.

However, the decision to exclude Ishan Kishan from the playing XI after the third T20I became a subject of scrutiny, drawing questioning remarks from former cricketer Ajay Jadeja. Kishan, who had a mixed performance in the series but showcased his batting prowess with notable knocks, found himself excluded, prompting discussions about team selection strategies.

As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considers a contract extension for head coach Rahul Dravid post the ICC World Cup 2023, India’s successful series against Australia reflected the depth of talent and adaptability within the squad, even in the absence of star players.

Puzzling Decision on Ishan Kishan:

“There was a series right after the World Cup. Ishan Kishan played three matches and went home. Was he really that tired after three matches that he needed rest? He didn’t even play a lot of games at the World Cup. He deserved his spot in the playing XI for the first few World Cup matches. How many Indian players have scored a double century on a good day? He can change the game on his day. When will he get ready? Will you keep him in on trial all the time? In the last two years, how many games has he played? This problem of Indian cricket is not of today, it is very old that we don’t select (players) but reject them,” Jadeja said Sports Tak.

Ishan Kishan’s Spectacular Showdown Against Australia:

Ishan Kishan, while keeping the wickets for India in the 3rd T20I against Australia in Guwahati, faced a challenging five-ball duck. Despite this early setback, the Indian left-hander showcased his batting prowess in the series opener at Visakhapatnam, playing an impressive knock of 58 runs off 39 balls. He continued his good form in the 2nd T20I at Thiruvananthapuram, contributing significantly with a brilliant innings of 52 runs off 32 balls. Across three innings in the series, Kishan accumulated a total of 110 runs, maintaining an average of 36.67. His notable performances with the bat highlighted his ability to make significant contributions to the Indian team in the T20 format.

“Ishan Kishan didn’t even play the entire five-match T20I series against Australia. He was sent home after three matches to rest. So, if this is going to continue, how will you ensure that he is fully ready?,” Jadeja attached.
