In a thrilling IPL encounter between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag etched their names in an unfortunate record book. Despite their valiant efforts, they ended up forming the second-biggest partnership in a losing cause in IPL history. Jaiswal, the left-hander, exhibited his batting prowess with a scintillating 67 off just 40 balls, embellished with seven fours and two sixes, striking at an impressive rate of 167.50. Parag, on the other hand, contributed a vital 77 off 49 deliveries, laced with eight fours and four sixes, at a strike rate of 157.14. Their partnership of 133 runs for the third wicket ignited hopes of a remarkable comeback in RR’s pursuit of a daunting 202-run target, but unfortunately, they fell agonizingly short by just one run, resulting in a heartbreaking loss.
The highest partnership in a losing cause still remains with Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey, who amassed 135 runs for SRH against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018, during a chase of 219 runs, albeit ending up on the losing side as RCB clinched victory by 14 runs.
Turning to the match itself, SRH elected to bat first after winning the toss. Despite a sluggish start, opener Travis Head and the versatile Nitish Reddy injected impetus into the innings with a crucial 96-run partnership for the third wicket. Nitish, in particular, dazzled with an unbeaten 76 off 42 balls, embellished with three fours and an astounding eight sixes, while Heinrich Klaasen provided invaluable support with an unbeaten 42 off 19 deliveries, including three fours and three sixes, guiding SRH to a commanding total of 201/3 in their allotted 20 overs. Avesh Khan and Sandeep Sharma showcased their bowling prowess for RR, but couldn’t prevent SRH from posting a formidable target.
In RR’s chase, disaster struck early as they lost two quick wickets with just one run on the board. However, the partnership between Jaiswal and Parag rekindled hopes of a stunning turnaround. Despite a valiant effort from Rovman Powell towards the end, who nearly pulled off a miraculous victory, RR ultimately fell short, succumbing to a heart-wrenching last-ball defeat. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s stellar bowling performance earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award for SRH, ably supported by Pat Cummins and T Natrajan, who also chipped in with crucial wickets.
With this victory, SRH solidified their position in fourth place on the table, boasting six wins and four losses, accumulating a total of 12 points. Meanwhile, RR maintained their stronghold at the top with eight wins and two losses, amassing a total of 16 points, despite the gut-wrenching defeat.
