Eden Gardens pitch curator Sujan Mukherjee has faced criticism from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) fans after he denied skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s request to prepare a spin-friendly track for their IPL 2025 opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Following KKR’s loss, Rahane expressed a desire for a pitch that would assist his spinners. However, Sujan Mukherjee, refused to alter the track conditions, stating that the pitch would remain as is as long as he was the curator. He also mocked the performance of KKR’s spinners, claiming that RCB’s bowlers outperformed them.

The controversy sparked an outcry from KKR fans on social media, who were disappointed with Mukherjee’s remarks. In response to the backlash, Mukherjee has now clarified his stance, asserting that he never denied any request from the franchise. He emphasized that no official or player from KKR had made a specific request regarding the pitch conditions before the match against RCB. Additionally, he mentioned that he shares a good relationship with the KKR management and owners.

“No official or player asked for the pitch requirement for the first match. A coach at the time of practice asked me about the behaviour of the pitch. I said ghumega bhi aur accha chalega (the pitch will turn, and it will be good for batting),” he told Sports Tak.

“I never denied anything to KKR. We have been in good relations for a long time. I prepared the pitch as per BCCI guidelines. Those who are accusing me know nothing,” he attached.
