In a grand and celebratory event held on National Sports Day, former Indian hockey player Lazarus Barla was honored with the prestigious ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the Biju Patnaik Sports Award presentation ceremony. The ceremony, which took place on the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, was marked by a sense of pride and recognition for sports excellence. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi personally presented Barla with a trophy, a cash award of Rs 4 lakh, and a citation.

Barla, who has had an illustrious career in Indian hockey, was visibly moved by the recognition and emphasized the deep significance of receiving such an award on a day dedicated to sports and in memory of Major Dhyan Chand. Paris Olympian Kishore Jena was honored for his outstanding performance, particularly for his ninth-place finish in the javelin throw qualification at the Paris Olympics, despite not advancing to the medal round. Jena received the Biju Patnaik Sports Award, which included a trophy, a cash award of Rs 3 lakh, and a citation, acknowledging his dedication and contribution to Indian athletics.

Furthermore, Coach Bijay Kumar Lakra, para-sportsperson Jafar Iqbal, young athlete Priteesmita Bhoi, and technical official Rupanwita Panda were also recognized for their exceptional contributions to sports. Each of these individuals received trophies, cash awards, and citations, highlighting their significant roles in advancing sports in Odisha. The ceremony was a true celebration of sporting excellence, honoring individuals who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of sports and have made significant impacts in their respective fields.
