In the early stages of the game, NEUFC took an aggressive approach, launching attacks from the flanks. The first significant opportunity occurred in the eighth minute when Romain Philippoteaux’s shot was blocked by Shillong’s defense. Shillong, adopting a counter-attacking strategy, managed to take the lead in the 17th minute with a challenging shot from Brazilian Douglas Rosa Tardin that found the back of the net.
Despite dominating possession, NorthEast struggled to create clear chances. Shillong Lajong almost doubled their lead when Daniel Goncalves hit the woodwork from a free-kick in the 27th minute. NorthEast United’s first notable chance came in the 44th minute, but Parthib Sundar Gogoi failed to capitalize on a cross by Phillippoteaux.
In the second half, NEUFC increased the pressure on Shillong’s defense. Nestor Albiach Roger scored the equalizer in the 59th minute with a close-range header. The turning point occurred in the 67th minute when Nickson was fouled in the penalty box, resulting in a penalty for NorthEast. Nestor calmly converted the penalty, securing the lead and three points for NorthEast United FC.
The victory keeps NorthEast United FC in contention for a spot in the semifinals, and they have one more match against Kerala Blasters FC remaining in the group stage.
