The IPL 2024 season is in full swing, offering a platform for young talents to showcase their skills and vie for a spot in India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. While stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah are almost certain picks, fierce competition is expected for the remaining 8-9 spots, particularly in the top order and bowling lineup.
One of the key points of discussion surrounds the opening partnership, with Rohit Sharma expected to open the innings. However, there’s uncertainty about his partner, with speculation suggesting it could be Virat Kohli. This raises questions about the fate of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, both of whom have struggled in the ongoing IPL despite their recent success in the Test arena against England.
Between Jaiswal and Gill, Jaiswal is believed to have the edge due to his aggressive batting style. However, his form has been inconsistent in this IPL season. Concerned about Jaiswal’s poor run of scores, former India batter Aakash Chopra has urged Rohit Sharma to personally mentor the young talent. Jaiswal’s performance is crucial to India’s T20 World Cup prospects, making it imperative for Rohit to provide him with support and guidance.
Rohit Sharma has been cautious in his praise for Jaiswal in the past, reflecting his awareness of the youngster’s potential but also the need for consistent performance. As the T20 World Cup approaches, Rohit’s attention to Jaiswal’s form could be instrumental in shaping India’s strategy and squad composition for the tournament.
“I am getting slightly worried about Yashasvi because Yashasvi didn’t used to play like this. He is trying to murder every ball. You are a very good player, and you are good because you believe in timing. You are not a wrestler and you are not Andre Russell. Your playing style is very different,” Chopra stated on his YouTube channel.
“Since I like this kid a lot, I want Kumar Sangakkara to talk to him, or else Rohit Sharma should pick up the phone and talk to him and say – ‘You have to go to the T20 World Cup but this form is not required, play a little cautiously’. He hit a six and a four, and then tried another big shot and got out.”
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s recent performance in the IPL stands in stark contrast to his stellar performance in India’s Test series against England, where he amassed over 700 runs and set and broke several records. However, his form in this year’s IPL has been disappointing compared to his achievements in the previous edition.
In the 2023 IPL season, Jaiswal showcased his batting prowess by scoring 625 runs in 14 matches, making him the fifth-highest run-scorer. However, this year, he has struggled to find his rhythm, managing only 121 runs from six innings, with a highest score of 39.
His recent scores of 24, 5, 10, 0, 24, 39, and 19 do not reflect his true talent, but competition for places in the side has intensified with the emergence of players like Abhishek Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Riyan Parag. Jaiswal cannot afford to be complacent about his position in the team, especially considering the unpredictable nature of cricket.
Despite his current slump, Jaiswal remains a strong contender for a spot in the Indian team. However, as history has shown, circumstances can change rapidly in cricket, and Jaiswal must work hard to regain his form and cement his place in the side.
