Sachin Tendulkar, legendary batter of Indian Cricketing arena has faced a lot of surprising bowling prodigies and lots of arch rivals with the softest and most articulate ways in his life. He is known for his calm presence on field with proper respect and subtle game strategies.
He is a man of grit everybody know it, but the emotional side of his life is yet little known.
Tendulkar did not fear the likes of Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, Courtney Walsh among others but he had a strange feeling about approaching his parents to talk about his engagement to Anjali, whom he eventually married in 1995.
It was love at first sight for Sachin Tendulkar who met Anjali at the airport while returning from an international tour as early as 1990. The star couple started dating but when Anjali, a paediatrician, asked if they should get engaged during a tour of New Zealand, Tendulkar went against tradition and asked his then-girlfriend to speak to his parents as well.
In a freewheeling chat with Graham Bensinger on his YouTube channel, Tendulkar revealed how he convinced Anjali to approach his family and talk about their engagement.
“In 1994, when we were in New Zealand. After that Auckland innings, I had another decent inning in Wellington. I was in a good mood,” Tendulkar said.
“She caught me at the right time, actually, and she said, ‘I think we should get engaged. What do you say?’ I said, ‘Yes, I’m ready.’
She said, ‘But for that, you need to speak to your family and I’ll speak to my family.’
“I’m sorry,’ I said. ‘You’ll have to speak to both the families, both sides. You are taking charge. I will not go back home and I’ll speak to my parents, no chance.’
“It was feeling odd. Though they knew Anjali, she had come home and all. But I was feeling odd. I said ‘if you manage to do both, then I am okay. If you say tomorrow, I will get engaged tomorrow;.
“So she was the one who spoke to both families,” Tendulkar added.
Tendulkar married Anjali in 1995 after dating for close to 5 years. The power couple have two children in Arjun and Sara. Notably, Anjali did not have much knowledge about cricket before she began dating the legendary batter.
