Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of the Indian cricket team culminated in a historic victory when India clinched the T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa in the final on June 29, winning by seven runs. This triumph was particularly significant for Dravid, a legendary cricketer who had never won a major ICC World Cup trophy as a player or captain. This victory served as a moment of redemption and a fitting conclusion to his international coaching career.

Following this monumental win, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir was appointed as Dravid’s successor. Gambhir’s tenure was set to begin with the white-ball tour to Sri Lanka starting on July 27. Gambhir’s appointment marked the beginning of a new era for the Indian cricket team, with expectations high following the success achieved under Dravid’s guidance.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated, “My moment was When Virat Kohli called Rahul Dravid and gave the cup… I saw him hug the cup and cry. Rahul Dravid screamed and cried. I saw him enjoy it. I felt that a lot.”

Indian spin veteran Ravichandran Ashwin shared a heartfelt tribute to Dravid’s success. Ashwin recalled the emotional moment when Dravid hugged the ICC T20 World Cup trophy and cried after leading the team to their first major trophy in 11 years. Despite facing criticism and setbacks throughout his career, such as the 2007 50-over World Cup first-round exit, Dravid’s dedication and leadership were instrumental in transforming the team over the past few years.

“I want to talk about a person who is sacred. 2007, 50-over World Cup. India gets knocked out. Rahul Dravid, the captain at that point in time. He does not captain the one-day side after that. He has been with the Indian team. If something does not go well, if the Indian team goes out, if they lose a match, immediately, they ask what Dravid is doing,” stated Ashwin.

“I know what he has been doing with this team for the past two-three years. I know how balanced he has been. I know how hard he has worked to change this approach. I know what he has given each of his players. Even when he is just sitting at home, he has been planning how to do this and that,” he concluded.

The final of the T20 World Cup 2024 saw a crucial partnership between Virat Kohli and Axar Patel, which propelled India to a competitive total of 176/7. The Men in Blue faced a challenging defense, but thanks to the exceptional death overs bowling by Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, they managed to hold South Africa off and secure a seven-run victory. This victory not only marked India’s second T20 World Cup title but also solidified Dravid’s legacy as a successful coach who overcame numerous challenges to achieve greatness with the team.
