Virender Sehwag’s assessment of Mumbai Indians’ current form suggests a significant overhaul in their roster for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Despite Rohit Sharma’s initial strong performance with a century, his subsequent decline and Hardik Pandya’s underwhelming captaincy tenure have cast doubt on their retention by the franchise. Hardik’s lackluster performance, particularly as captain, has raised concerns, with minimal contributions in both batting and bowling departments.

Meanwhile, Rohit’s inconsistency after a promising start has put his form into question, further compounded by his struggles affecting his role in Team India’s plans for the T20 World Cup. Sehwag suggests that only Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah appear to be reliable choices for Mumbai Indians, highlighting their consistent performances amidst the team’s challenges. With the IPL 2025 mega auctions approaching, Mumbai Indians may need to make strategic decisions to rejuvenate their squad and address their current shortcomings.

“Tell me something. Having Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan in one film won’t guarantee a hit. Will it? You will have to perform, right? You need a good script. Similarly, all these big names will have to come together and perform on the ground. Rohit Sharma scored one century, and MI lost. Where are the rest of the performances?” Sehwag said.

“Ishan Kishan played the entire season and he couldn’t last beyond the Powerplay. Only two names are certainties at this stage for MI – Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav. They will be the top two names retained. And if it then boils down to the third or 4th option, we will see.”

Former India batter Manoj Tiwary has joined Virender Sehwag in advocating for a leadership change within the Mumbai Indians team. Tiwary suggests that either Jasprit Bumrah or Suryakumar Yadav should be considered for the captaincy role, highlighting their previous experiences leading the Indian team in various formats. Bumrah’s leadership stint in a Test match and T20Is, along with his impressive performance in IPL 2024, where he ranks second on the Orange Cap list with 20 wickets, makes him a compelling choice. Similarly, Suryakumar’s consistent batting form, including a century and a total of 345 runs, underscores his potential as a captain.

Tiwary’s confidence in Rohit Sharma not returning for another season adds weight to the argument for investing in fresh leadership. As Mumbai Indians strategize for IPL 2025, appointing either Bumrah or Suryakumar as captain could bring a fresh perspective and rejuvenate the team’s performance.

“I am also looking at Bumrah and SKY as the two players who will be retained by Mumbai Indians. No one beyond them, and no foreign players either. Tim David has not lived up to the hype. My advice to the management would be to retain just two players – Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah – and make one of the two captains. I am not keeping Rohit either because, looking at him, it appears he doesn’t want to be retained,” attached Tiwary.
