Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar expressed his admiration for the Indian cricket team, stating that they “deserve” to be in the final after their impressive 70-run victory over New Zealand in the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium. In this match, the opening duo of captain Rohit Sharma and young talent Shubman Gill played aggressively against the New Zealand bowlers, while centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer contributed to India’s commanding total of 397/3.

Akhtar particularly praised Rohit Sharma for his captaincy skills and the explosive start he provided in the opening overs. The former fast bowler acknowledged the collective effort of the Indian batting department that allowed them to dominate the middle overs and set a formidable target.

“India again brutally hammered New Zealand, all credit goes to Rohit Sharma as a captain. He hammers bowlers in the opening overs. If Gill stayed on the pitch he could have completed his ton. Shreyas Iyer is an amazing talent he is a guy who takes away a lot of pressure from the senior players. India deserves to be in the final.”

Looking ahead to the final, Akhtar mentioned that India’s opponent is yet to be decided, with South Africa and Australia set to face each other at Eden Gardens. He expressed support for Australia to secure the final spot but also noted a factor that could favor South Africa, keeping the anticipation high for the upcoming clash.

“I feel Australia will reach the final, South Africa has only one chance to bat first and put up a total of 350 runs,” Akhtar stated.
