In the world of One Day International (ODI) cricket, India’s Shubman Gill has emerged as the new king of the batting rankings, dethroning Babar Azam of Pakistan. Shubman Gill achieved the top spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Batting Rankings for the first time in his career. He shared his reaction to this milestone with a succinct one-word post on Instagram and received congratulations from fellow cricketer Suryakumar Yadav, who had predicted Gill’s rise to the top.
Shubman Gill’s ascension to the top spot makes him the fourth Indian batsman to achieve this honor, joining the ranks of iconic Indian cricketers like Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Sachin Tendulkar. Gill’s journey to the top has been marked by a stellar season, particularly during the ICC World Cup, where he has been a vital part of the Indian team. He has amassed an impressive total of 1449 runs from 26 matches in the 2023 season, boasting an average of 63.00. In the ICC World Cup, Gill scored 219 runs in six innings, with notable half-centuries against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, former Indian captain Virat Kohli secured the fourth spot in the latest ICC rankings. Kohli achieved this position by equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record of ODI centuries with his 49th century during a match against South Africa. This remarkable achievement helped him jump three places to take the fourth spot in the rankings.
Babar Azam, the former top-ranked batsman from Pakistan, experienced a drop in his ratings, falling to the second spot in the ICC rankings after losing six rating points. Babar Azam had scored 282 runs from eight innings in the World Cup.
In the men’s bowling rankings, Shubman Gill’s teammate, Mohammed Siraj, regained the top position by climbing two spots. These developments reflect the dynamic and competitive nature of international cricket rankings, with Indian cricketers making their mark on the global stage.
