As people age, cognitive health often declines, leading to concerns about cognitive impairment. A study published in Nutrients found that regular egg consumption may help mitigate this decline, particularly in women. The research highlighted that eggs are linked to improvements in semantic memory, which is responsible for storing factual information and concepts, and executive functioning, which involves organizational skills, planning, and attentional control. By incorporating eggs into their diet, individuals may be able to slow the weakening of memory and cognitive abilities commonly associated with aging.

Maintaining cognitive health with eggs:

A longitudinal study highlighted the role of regular egg consumption in maintaining cognitive health, particularly in women. Over time, it was observed that increased egg intake reduced the likelihood of cognitive decline by 0.1 points. Women who consumed eggs more than five times a week experienced a half-point less decline in cognitive abilities over four years compared to those who did not eat eggs. While no food can entirely prevent cognitive decline with age, regular egg consumption may help mitigate the early risks, supporting better cognitive health.

Eggs’ nutrients

Despite their cholesterol content sometimes giving them a bad reputation, eggs are rich in protein and essential vitamins. The study showed that eggs do not have any negative effects on brain functioning. Instead, they may help reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline when consumed mindfully and in moderation. While eggs are a nutritious food beneficial for brain health, the researchers clarified that the study did not claim eggs directly improve cognitive function. Rather, it found that regular egg consumption is associated with a reduced likelihood of early cognitive impairment in older adults.
