Lakshya Sen, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist, emerged victorious at the Canada Open 2023 by defeating the reigning All England champion, Li Shi Feng, in the men’s singles final. The match resulted in a confident straight games win for Lakshya, with a score of 21-18, 22-20. This victory marks Lakshya’s second BWF World Tour title, following his previous win at the India Open in January 2022.
During the tournament, Lakshya, currently ranked 19th, showcased remarkable performances by defeating several top-ranked opponents. In the Round of 32, he overcame the challenge of world number four Kunlavut Vitidsarn. Subsequently, Lakshya secured a commanding win in the semifinals against Kento Nishimoto, the 11th-ranked player in the world, with a score of 21-17, 21-14. This victory propelled him into his second Super 500 final and marked his first appearance in a BWF summit clash in over a year.
Lakshya’s journey to this triumph has not been without challenges. After the World Championships in August of the previous year, he underwent a nose surgery to correct a deviated septum. The recovery process took considerable time, and Lakshya struggled with early exits from tournaments. However, he displayed signs of recovery when he reached the semifinals of the Thailand Open. The Canada Open victory now highlights his exceptional skills and determination to return to the top level of competition.
Noting that Lakshya’s previous final appearance was at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in August of the previous year, making his victory at the Canada Open even more significant for him and his fans.
