Zika virus, a type of flavivirus, is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which are also known to spread dengue and chikungunya. This RNA virus shares similarities with dengue, leading to potential cross-reactivity in diagnostic tests, which complicates accurate diagnosis in regions where multiple flaviviruses are endemic. What distinguishes Zika from other mosquito-borne viruses is its ability to be transmitted through sexual contact in addition to mosquito bites, making control and prevention efforts more challenging. The Zika virus is also associated with a higher incidence of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological condition characterized by paralysis and muscle weakness.

Most individuals infected with the Zika virus exhibit minimal or no symptoms. However, when a pregnant person contracts the virus, there is a risk of severe congenital conditions in the fetus, including impaired brain development and vision problems. The common symptoms of Zika virus infection include fever, headaches, joint discomfort, conjunctivitis (redness in the eyes), and a maculopapular rash, which consists of both raised and flat red areas of skin and can be painful.

Dr. Subrata Das emphasizes the importance of protective measures against mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent, sleeping under mosquito nets, and avoiding travel to areas where Zika is prevalent. Currently, there is no specific treatment or vaccine for Zika virus; treatment is limited to managing symptoms.

Recently, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) reported new cases of Zika virus infection in Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune districts. On Friday, two individuals from Pimpri-Chinchwad and eight others from Pune district tested positive for the virus. The reported cases included six from Pune city, two from Pune Rural, and two from Pimpri-Chinchwad (PCMC). Since July 20, Pune district has recorded a total of 65 Zika virus cases.
