Bangladesh and Canada have launched a “Year of Action” on nutrition, that will include a range of commitment-making events.

Today, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh, Zahid Maleque united with Minister of International Development, Canada, Karina Gould to begin the event, according to a High Commission of Canada.

The Year of Action will complete with the Nutrition for Growth Summit (N4G), to be organized by the Government of Japan in December 2021. As a result of the launch event, CA$520 million has been promised towards Nutrition for Growth.

With the origin of the pandemic, the number of people experiencing acute hunger is assumed to increase to 265 million by the end of 2020. Experts predict that globally, COVID-19 is expected to raise the number of malnourished children by 6.7 million, while the number of people in absolute poverty could rise by 49 million.

Today’s decision will assist approach the huge nutritional demands of the most affected and most marginalized populations by reducing starvation and stunting, limiting further cases of maternal anemia, and avoiding child deaths.

During the event, Minister Maleque told Bangladesh will proceed to invest in services that need a full life cycle access to malnutrition—especially for pregnant women, mothers, and children.
