A Hyderabad Rajendranaagr based Masjid-e-Mustafa has set up a fitness centre with a gym for women staying in the nearby slum areas.

Marking it first of its kind of thing to be introduced in Telangana, a mosque has built a gym for women with an expert fitness trainer. The main objective behind the setting up of the gym is to curtail the chances of communicable ailments in women residing in the slums. In addition to the gym set-up, professional woman trainers have been roped in to train women in exercises, in two sessions.

The gym hired fitness counselors and a doctor. Funded by SEED, a US-based NGO, the gym is located in the mosque at Wadi-e-Mahmood in Rajendranagar. A Hyderabad based NGO, Helping Hand Foundation, is coordinating with the mosque committee to run the gym.

According to a survey held in the slum areas of Hyderbad, it revealed that 52% of women are at critical risk of cardio-metabolic syndrome.  The major components of the non-communicable ailments program at the mosque clinic-cum-gym are risk assessment, counseling on diet and exercise, and testing for kidney, liver, and eye problems.

Mujtaba Hasan Askari, HHF managing trustee told an Indian English newspaper,  The Times of India, “Trained and professional counselors are part of the clinic.”
