India’s first Professional Boxing League (IPBL), the first of its kind started in Madurai on Last Sunday. The tournaments are featured by more than 100 boxers including 65 men and 35 women participating coming from across the country.
Speaking to the press on Saturday, the organizers of the tournament, Boxing Development Association (BDA), said that the main aim behind coming up with the concept was to popularize boxing as a sports in and around Madurai.
M Baskara Seliyan, the boxing coach and chairman of IPBL said that considering how kabaddi got a face-lift through Pro Kabaddi League, BDA Wanted to popularize boxing in southern Tamil Nadu through tournament.
He Added later ,”The awareness about boxing is very limited in southern districts of the state. But if we consider the youth population in rural parts of southern India there are a lot of potential talents,” and by conducting a tournament like this, academic institutions would take boxing more seriously.
The Seven days running event will end of January 26th at Gandhi Museum.
