Visitors to Bangkok’s mighty Chao Phraya River were treated to a ‘world first’ over the weekend when they witnessed the inaugural King’s Cup Elephant Boat Races, sponsored by Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas. Twelve international teams, each consisting of twenty paddlers, raced specially commissioned boats decorated with artistic elephant heads rising elegantly above the water. After three days battling it out on the River of Kings, paddlers from The Royal Thai Navy Seals, whose elite division was made famous for their part in rescuing 12 children and their coach from a cave in Chiang Rai last year, claimed the coveted 2019 King’s Cup. The boat race is set to become one of Thailand’s most memorable cultural events and a ‘bucket list’ activity for visitors to the Kingdom.
