Formula One has announced that Ferrari will foray into the official F1 esports series this year. The Italian manufacturer would be the tenth and final team to join F1 pro series.
Mattia Binotto, the team principal of Ferrari declared earlier this month the racing giants were in talks with Formula One on the subject of getting into the F1 Pro series. It has been said ‘they were looking seriously’ into joining the band of other nine teams.
Entering its third season, qualifying for the esports series is already underway ahead of the Pro Draft, which will take place over two days in July, when participating teams will have a chance to add new players to their roster.
A total of 12 races will be held over four live events in the Pro Series. The competition is scheduled to take place between September and December later this year. The winner team will walk away with the prize money of 500,000 dollars which has been doubled for the series’s last installment.
Julian Tan, the head of growth at Formula One and F1 esports said, “Last year saw amazing growth for the series with the commitment of Ferrari completing the virtual grid, we continue to elevate the series to greater heights as we further align our virtual and real world sports, creating one of the world’s most innovative esports offering whether in motorsports and beyond.”
Last season, the esports agency registered a record audience of 5.5 million viewers across its linear and digital distribution networks for the F1 pro series.
