Ministry of External Affair and BCCI is collaborating with BCCI to develop the cricket eco-ecosystem in Maldives.

This venture is a response to the beseeching of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The president implored for India’s aid to develop the sport in Maldives.

Foreign Secretary, Vijay Gokhale addressed the media on Thursday regarding the issue. He said India is also trying to construct a stadium in the Island country. He commented, “One of the focuses in our ties with the Maldives is on people-to-people relationship and in looking at ways to strengthen it.”

In the previous month, Maldives President attended an IPL match. Afterwards, he expressed the desire of having a cricket team in Maldives and sought India’s assistance in achieving that.

“So among his requests, which are under examination, is a cricket stadium in the country. We expect to build it under the line of credit that we plan to give. A team of  BCCI visited Maldives earlier in May in training of Maldivian cricketers, organizing coaching programs and supply for kits.” Gokhale added.

During the President’s visit to Bengaluru, he gifted jerseys by Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli, former skipper Mahednra Singh Dhoni and Chief Operating Officer of IPL, Hemang Amin.

On the occasion, BBCI’s general Manager, Saba Karim with other top officials had reportedly given a presentation to the entire contingent.

Cricket Board of Maldives is the governing body of cricket in the country. It became a member of the Asian Cricket Council and affiliated with the International Cricket Council in 1988.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is scheduled to pay a visit to the country in his first bi-lateral trip after getting reelected as the prime minister for second term.
