The opening match of Women’s World Cup in France drew record viewers on Friday. Broadcasting platforms stated the figures are groundbreaking in women’s soccer.

SportsPro report on the game reveals more details on the first match of Women’s world cup. French free-to-air broadcasting platform TF1 registered a whopping 9.83 million viewership for the opening game between France and South Korea. The private TV channel seized 44% of the viewing market share in France and hiked at 10.9 million. The previous record for women’s soccer which was 4.12 has been beaten on Friday.

Other TV outlets also enjoyed lucrative traffic. Canal+ drew a further 800,000 viewers. On other hand, BBC reported to register a 2.9 million viewership for the opening game despite the national team not being involved.

Women’s soccer in British television is also enjoying an enviable record. On Sunday, the England and Scotland match earned the title of most watched women’s game in history. The matched generated a whopping 6.1 million viewership and seized 37.8 percent share of the available audience. The lioness beat the Scottish team by 2-1in that match.

The viewership in women’s soccer is making stride on other side of Atlantic as well. US Fox Sports recorded significant growth for the first two days of the tournament, with its metered market Nielsen scores up to 11 per cent over 2015 and 79 per cent over 2011.

Before the women’s world cup, Fifa set a target of one billion viewers for the 2019 Women’s world cup.  The international governing body of football also announced it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UN Women to boost effort to empower women around the world and achieve gender equality.

Fifa President, Gianni Infantino stated, “This is significant moment for Fifa as we combine forces with UN Women to realize gender equality for women both on and off the pitch. Together, we will raise awareness about women’s football and its impact in terms of health, empowerment and positive role women and girls around the world.”
