After spurring a heated discussion online over plus-sized mannequins, Nike unveiled para-sports mannequins. Para-sports also known as adaptive sports and disabled sports, includes activities for people with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Para-athletes receive very little to no coverage from mainstream media. That propagates a myth that person with disabilities can’t be sportsperson. Paralympic is organized at the same time along with since 1988. Still, successful para-athletes struggle to get recognition. Nike’s endeavor hopes to bring the visibility to the demographic.

Nike said in a press release, “Highlighting a full-range of athlete figures, shows multiple plus-sized and para-sport mannequins, a first for the city’s store.”

Paralympic champion Tanni Grey-Thompson stated to Elle, “It is good to see big brands beginning to reflect a greater variety of shapes and sizes. The plus-sized mannequin has stolen the headlines, but the para-sport mannequins represents a step in the right direction for the positive portrayal of disability sport and physical activity for all.”
