A South Asian variant of Tour de France, tour de Khunjerab is presenting new challenge to the cyclists of the world. Last week of June, the cycling tour attracted around 88 cyclists. Less than half of the competitors were able to finish the race within allotted time.
Located 5000 meters above the sea level, Tour de Khunjerab is undoubtedly one of the world’s high altitude cycling competition in Pakistan. Partaking in a physically demanding competition like this literally requires cycling on the roof of the earth. But the journey is dotted with snow-capped mountains and blackened glaciers. Two teams from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka as well as many solo cyclists took part in the last edition of the race.
The four stages-three ranging from 68 to 94 kilometers (42 to 58 miles) plus a shorter time trial- are much shorter than many other cycling races.
