The Cabinet Ministry of Punjab State Government approved to name a proposed Sports university in the state following the name of incumbent CM Amrinder Singh’s Grandfather Maharaja Bhupinder Singh.

The decision of putting name of former ruler of royal state of Patiala, Mahraja Bhupinder Singh was taken following his contribution to the sports sector.

The Draft bill for setting up the Sports University is scheduled to be held in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Punjab Assembly.

It was Sports Minister Rana Gurmit Sodhi’s proposal to name the university after CM’s grandfather name. “The Chief Minister was not in favour…Overruling the Chief Minister’s objections, the Cabinet decided to name the university as Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Sports and Science University in recognition of the latter’s contribution to the promotion of Sports. He (the CM) eventually gave in to the pressure of his Cabinet colleagues, and a unanimous decision was taken,” the government said in an an official statement.

While addressing the Vidhan Sabha on June 19th 2017, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Amrinder Singh has announced to set up a sports university in the state. The decision was followed by the setup of a steering committee under the chairmanship of Olympian and Member International Olympic Committee Randhir Singh to finalise the modalities to establish “the sports educational institute of international eminence”.

On June 6, the Punjab Cabinet approved the Punjab Sports University Ordinance 2019 paving ways for the establishment of the University of Patiala. Regarding this a notification issues on July 22nd and  it is expected that the  varsity academic session will start from September 1st.

The university seeks to promote education in the areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching, the statement said.

It will focus on education, training and research in areas related to sports based on high standard infrastructure, besides offering professional and academic leadership to other institutions in the field of physical education and sports sciences, it added.
