Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamta Banerjee coveys her best wishes to East Bengal football club. The Kolkata-based football club celebrates its 100th anniversary on Thursday.
Mamta Banerjee wrote on her twitter handle, “Today is the centenary of East Bengal FC. The club has had a glorious association with football, contributing to the sport’s promotion. My best wishes to all present and former players, officials and supporters of East Bengal.”
East Bengal started its journey from August, 1920 by noted industrialist Suresh Chandra Chaudhary. Most of the members of the club can trace their origins back to East Bengal, now Bangladesh.
Governor of Meghalaya, Tathagata Roy on Tuesday sparked a controversy by saying it is inappropriate to support the football club while living in West Bengal.
Roy commented on Twitter, “East Bengal Athletic Club (Basically soccer) is celebrating its centenary. Has it struck its office-bearers or any of the supporters why they are supporting East Bengal while sitting in West Bengal?”
The governor later issued a clarification saying, “Abuses are pouring in due to lack of understanding. Many of us have forgotten our East Bengali roots, but support the club of that same name. The fact that I support East Bengal while sitting in West Bengal should constantly remind me that we were driven out because our religion.”
