The Chief Minister of Delhi state government, Arvind Kejriwal has facilitated visually impaired Para-athlete Avnil Kumar for bringing bronze medal in the 2018 Para Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
As in reward, Avnil Kumar who started his training as an athlete in 2011, was given a prize sum of rupees 50 lakh by the Delhi Government for his remarkable performance at an international tournament.
“Avinal has brought laurels not just for himself or his family but to the Delhi State and the nation as well. We will also like to thank his coach and the family,” the Delhi Chief Minister said.
The 25 year-old Avnil who is from Kangra in Himachal Pardesh has bagged bronze medal in the 400-metre event at the Jakarta Paralympics.
Speaking to ANI after the felicitation ceremony, the para-athlete said that he is happy about being honored and thanked the Delhi government for giving equal treatment to both able and disabled athletes.
“I am happy to be here. I would like to thank the Delhi government and Kejriwal Sir for honoring me. They treated a disabled person like the able athletes by adopting the same policy for both the categories. Thank you for that,” Kumar said.
Talking more about the hardships came rng his journey to the Para Asian Games podium, the Paralympic athlete said it was really difficult to continue his pratice sessions.
In addition to this, the state government has also announced that that the athletes from the state representing the nation at the international tournaments, under the “Mission Excellence”, will also be rewarded a sum of ₹16 annually to meet their training and coaching expenses.
