Meerut has contributed a bit in the winning of Indian players’ squad gone to Jakarta for Asian Games.
At the time when the whole country was hailing its athletes for clinching gold medal performance, there was a city also back in home country, India, congratulating itself for it’s little but crucial contribution of the games. Meerut, is a western UP district of country, always known for delivering state-of-the-art cricket gears, has supplied shot puts and javelins that Sapna Barman(Heptathlon), Tajinderpal Singh Toor(Shot Put) And Neeraj Chopra(Javelin throw) used to win their gold medals.
The victory gave much-needed boost-up to Meerut-based sports goods manufactures for diversifying into other discrete sectors of the athletics including Fitness, Gym, and Other high-end Equipment.
According to a report published in the ET, the President of All India Sports Goods Manufacturers Federation, Puneet Mohan Sharma says, “Meerut has already made a name as the world’s top manufacturing hub for cricket goods. He added further “But new and niche sectors such as gym equipment and weights for athlete training are providing companies here an opportunity to diversify and reach out to new markets globally. Cricket, after all, is restricted to only 125 countries.”
Now it is apparent that the sports industry is going beyond cricket as a lot many other sports forms are being practiced by the young Indian athletes.
The phenomenon change invites new sports opportunities for investors targeting the Indian market-from brand recognition to starting up a new venture.
The city of Meerut houses more than 15 top brands in several sports categories including Gymnastics, Weight Training, Fitness, Weightlifting, Table Tennis and Sportswear.
According to the commerce ministry, the value of the sports gods exported in 2017-18 was rupees 1079 crore.
Owing to the abundance of skilled and unskilled laborers, proximity to the NCR region and the presence of a large number of well-experience manufacturers led the city of Meerut way far more ahead in comparison to other sports equipment market hubs like Jalandhar, a market majorly focuses on the production of inflatables like soccer balls, volleyballs.
Likewise Meerut, Jalandhar market is not diversifying itself which results in a slight fall in the market share of their manufactured sports equipment amidst foreign-land competitors.
The other and the potent factor which will boom, the Meerut based sports goods and equipment market are the new 14-lane Meerut-Delhi Expressway.
