In a sci-fi Hollywood movie of 80’s named “Back to the Future”, it was prophesied that in future we are going to make it to self-lacing sneakers.
After few years, American sports brand Nike made the movie’s prophecy in to reality by introducing first shoe in the market with “Power Lacing” facility. Moving ahead, major sports brand, Nike introduced all New Nike Adapt BB Basketball shoes that use a power-lacing system designed to automatically tighten and loosen around a foot depending on the movement of the athlete.
The shoes are all set to go on sale by 17th of February 2019 for $350 (Rs 25,000) in United States.
“We picked basketball as the first sport for Nike Adapt intentionally because of the demands that athletes put on their shoes,” Eric Avar, Nike VP creative director of innovation, said in a statement.
The shoe can be synchronised to an app easily installed in a smartphone which subsequently enable users to control the adjust-ability of the shoe as per his/her requirement.
The Adapt BB shoes feature a custom motor and gear train that can sense tension needed by the foot. Athletes can use two buttons built into the shoe or an accompanying smartphone app to “input different fit settings depending on different moments of a game,” according to Nike.

“We picked basketball as the first sport for Nike Adapt intentionally because of the demands that athletes put on their shoes,” Eric Avar, Nike VP Creative Director of Innovation, said in a statement. “During a normal basketball game the athlete’s foot changes and the ability to quickly change your fit by loosening your shoe to increase blood flow and then tighten again for performance is a key element that we believe will improve the athlete’s experience.”
Nike further also notify that the shoes will require charging and a recharging mat will come with each pair. The brand added that in future, they will also try to expand the technology used in the shoe to other sports and shoes ranges in the future.
